Praia do Tofo, on Mozambique's Inhambane coast, is one of the world's premier sites for reef manta rays and seasonal whale sharks, where year-round upwelling concentrates plankton over deep cleaning-station reefs. It is the birthplace of the Marine Megafauna Foundation, whose decades-long photo-ID work here is the largest and longest-running manta database in Africa.

Description
Tofo is a beach town in Inhambane Province on Mozambique's southern Indian Ocean coast, where the narrow continental shelf, the warm southward-flowing Mozambique Channel eddies, and localised upwelling south of Praia do Tofo drive year-round plankton productivity that draws an exceptional concentration of marine megafauna. The reefs lie offshore in 18–34 m of water and are reached only by semi-rigid inflatable boats (RIBs) surf-launched directly off the beach through the breaking shorebreak, with negative entries used to reach the deeper sites quickly against current. Tofo is the founding home of the Marine Megafauna Foundation (established by Dr Andrea Marshall and Dr Simon Pierce), whose photo-ID catalogues are the largest and longest-running in Africa: a 2011 study identified 449 individual reef manta rays (Mobula alfredi) with a super-population estimate of 802 and a strong 3.55:1 female bias, and a 2005–2019 dataset photo-identified 706 whale sharks (Rhincodon typus), most of them juveniles. The same deep cleaning stations that draw mantas also host the world's largest marine stingray, the rare smalleye stingray (Megatrygon microps), first studied here. Reef manta rays are present year-round (best on the deep cleaning-station dives), whale sharks peak October–March when summer plankton blooms arrive, and migrating humpback whales pass June–November. The destination is suited to certified divers comfortable at 20–30 m: most flagship sites are advanced, with surf launches, deep reefs, and current that can run moderate to strong.
Highlights
What makes this dive worth the trip.
Tofo is the founding home of the Marine Megafauna Foundation, established by Dr Andrea Marshall and Dr Simon Pierce; its manta-ray photo-ID databases are described as the largest and longest-running in Africa, built over roughly 20 years and documenting the largest identified populations of both reef and giant manta rays on the continent.
A 2011 peer-reviewed photo-ID study off Tofo Beach identified 449 individual reef manta rays (Mobula alfredi) over four years and estimated a super-population of 802 individuals — the first such estimate for the species at a monitored aggregation — with a strongly female-biased sex ratio of 3.55:1, suggesting Tofo is a critical mating and nursery area.
Whale sharks (Rhincodon typus) are present off Tofo year-round but peak October–March when summer plankton blooms arrive; a 15-year photo-ID dataset (2005–2019) catalogued 706 individuals off Praia do Tofo, mostly juveniles, confirming the site as a globally important whale-shark aggregation.

Dive sites

Reggies
An advanced site about 15 km northeast of the launch (25–35 minutes by boat) built on impressive rock formations with a leopard-shark cave and multiple cleaning stations. Resting leopard (zebra) sharks, grey reef and whitetip reef sharks, and eagle rays are the draw, alongside game fish and seasonal megafauna. Its depth (25–30 m) and rock-formation terrain make it a destination dive for experienced groups.

Marble Arch
A more accessible Open Water-level site about 7 km from the launch (15–20 minutes by boat), set on a donut-shaped reef in the area sometimes called 'Whale Shark Alley'. Three interconnected swim-throughs cut through 6–8 m reef walls into the centre of the formation, giving it an architectural feel. The shallower depth and gentler profile make it a good warm-up or second dive away from the deep cleaning stations.

Clownfish Reef
A shallow inshore reef about 1 km from the beach (a 5-minute boat ride), named for the clownfish sheltering in their host sea anemones. It serves as a nursery for juvenile reef fish and is one of the few genuinely beginner-friendly sites in Tofo, used for check dives and training away from the deep, current-swept cleaning stations. Octopus are common and the easy depth suits photographers and newer divers.

Giant's Castle
A close-in flagship site about 3 km east of the launch (a 5–10 minute boat ride), built around a flat reef that drops away in a dramatic wall and holds three cleaning stations. Reef mantas, smalleye stingrays and other rays come in to be cleaned, while large schools of bigeye trevally and barracuda tornado overhead and game fish patrol the blue. With multiple cleaning stations and abundant pelagic action it has a reputation that 'anything can happen', from manta trains to passing whale sharks in season.

Manta Reef
Tofo's iconic site, roughly 15–20 km south of the launch (a 25–40 minute boat ride), and the most reliable place to encounter reef manta rays at their cleaning stations. Described as the 'fishiest, easiest and shallowest of Tofo's deep sites', it runs a series of cleaning bommies where mantas queue to be cleaned by wrasse and butterflyfish, plus a canyon and northern pinnacles with strong macro life. Divers are kept to designated observation zones to avoid disturbing the cleaning behaviour the Marine Megafauna Foundation studies here.

The Office
A northern classic roughly 15 km from the launch (a 25–35 minute boat ride), known for better visibility than the southern reefs and as one of the best spots to hear and encounter humpback whales during the June–November migration. The reef carries game fish overhead and a patrolling potato bass, with the chance of seasonal sharks and passing megafauna. Its more exposed, deeper character keeps it firmly an advanced dive.
