Hin Daeng / Hin Muang

Hin Daeng ('Red Rock') and its sister pinnacle Hin Muang ('Purple Rock') are twin submerged seamounts in the open southern Andaman Sea, roughly 12 nautical miles southwest of Koh Rok and about 55 km offshore from Koh Lanta. Carpeted in red and purple soft corals and plunging past 60 m, they offer Thailand's most dramatic wall diving and its best odds of encountering oceanic manta rays and whale sharks.

Description

Hin Daeng and Hin Muang are two isolated pinnacles rising from deep water in the southern Andaman Sea, at the far south of Mu Ko Lanta National Park. Hin Daeng breaks the surface as a small rock and drops in steep walls and ridges to beyond 50–60 m; Hin Muang, lying roughly 500 m to the southwest, is fully submerged (its summit at about 8 m) and forms what is widely described as Thailand's tallest vertical wall, falling away past 60–70 m into the blue. Both are draped in dense soft-coral growth — predominantly red at Hin Daeng and vivid purple at Hin Muang — and surrounded by schooling pelagics. Their exposed, offshore position channels nutrient-rich current onto the rocks, which is what draws large oceanic manta rays (up to about 4 m wingspan) and whale sharks, most reliably from February through April. There is no land or mooring shelter, so surface conditions can be rough and currents moderate to strong; the sites are best suited to experienced divers (operators typically require Advanced certification or 50+ logged dives). They are reached as a long day trip by speedboat from Koh Lanta (about 1.5–2 hours) or by Andaman liveaboard. Because they sit within Mu Ko Lanta National Park, the offshore islands and pinnacles are officially closed during the southwest monsoon (16 May–15 November), so diving runs roughly mid-November to mid-May.

Highlights

What makes this dive worth the trip.

  • Hin Daeng and Hin Muang are widely rated the best dive sites accessible from Koh Lanta and among the finest in Thailand, prized for steep soft-coral walls and big-animal encounters. Hin Daeng is named 'Red Rock' for its red soft corals and Hin Muang 'Purple Rock' for its purple ones; the two pinnacles lie only about 500 m apart, so a single trip normally dives both.
  • Hin Muang is described as the highest vertical wall in Thailand: its summit sits around 8 m below the surface and the wall drops away to roughly 60–70 m, putting the deeper face well below recreational limits and making strict depth and gas discipline essential.
  • The exposed pinnacles offer Thailand's best combined odds of oceanic manta rays and whale sharks. Whale sharks can appear in any open month but encounters peak from early February to late April, and oceanic mantas (up to about 4 m across) gather to feed in the current, most reliably January through April.

Hin Daeng (Red Rock)

A large pinnacle that just breaks the surface and drops away in steep ridges and walls, named 'Red Rock' for the red soft corals that cover it. The southwest face falls as a sheer soft-coral wall to over 50–60 m, while gentler ridges on the eastern side slope into deeper water and carry the densest coral growth. Pelagics such as trevallies, barracuda and rainbow runners patrol the rock, leopard sharks rest on the sand, and the open-ocean position makes this one of Thailand's most reliable spots for oceanic mantas and whale sharks during the February–April peak. The site is exposed with moderate to strong currents and is recommended for experienced divers.

Hin Muang (Purple Rock)

A fully submerged pinnacle about 500 m southwest of Hin Daeng, named 'Purple Rock' for the vivid purple soft corals and anemones that blanket it. Its top sits roughly 8 m below the surface and it forms what is described as Thailand's tallest vertical wall, dropping past 60–70 m into the blue. Swarms of glassfish and silversides shelter on the wall and are hunted by jacks and trevallies, while the deep, current-swept setting attracts oceanic mantas, occasional whale sharks and pelagic schools. With no surface marker and a wall that exceeds recreational depth limits, careful depth and buoyancy management are essential; the site is for experienced divers only.

Koh Haa (The Cathedral)

A cluster of limestone islets about 16–25 km west of Koh Lanta, within Mu Ko Lanta National Park, sheltering a shallow turquoise lagoon. Koh Haa Yai is famous for 'The Cathedral', a set of connected caverns whose entrances lie underwater at modest depth, lit by shafts of natural light. Walls and slopes around the islets drop to about 30–35 m and host turtles, whitetip reef sharks, moray eels, lionfish, scorpionfish and dense reef fish, while the calm, shallow lagoon (about 5–15 m) is good for macro life and is far more sheltered than the offshore pinnacles. It is the usual second site paired with Hin Daeng/Hin Muang day trips and is suitable for a wider range of experience, though the caverns themselves are an advanced overhead environment.

Koh Rok (Rok Nok / Rok Nai)

Twin islands — Koh Rok Nok ('outer') and Koh Rok Nai ('inner') — separated by a shallow channel about 50 km south of Koh Lanta and roughly 12 nautical miles northeast of Hin Daeng. The diving is on one of Thailand's prettiest and best-preserved hard-coral gardens, sloping gently to around 15–20 m, with carpet anemones, giant clams and abundant reef fish. Common sightings include blacktip reef sharks, batfish, angelfish, parrotfish, sweetlips, snapper and turtles. Currents are usually mild and the shallow, sheltered reefs make Koh Rok the most beginner-friendly site in the group; it is reached as a fast day trip (under an hour by speedboat) from Koh Lanta.
