Bligh Water

Bligh Water is the deep, current-swept channel between Fiji's two main islands, Viti Levu and Vanua Levu, widely called the 'soft coral capital of the world' for the Dendronephthya-blanketed seamounts and pinnacles—E6, Mount Mutiny, Mellow Yellow—that rise sheer from depths of around 900 m into recreational range.

Description

Named after Captain William Bligh, who sailed this passage after the 1789 Bounty mutiny, Bligh Water is the ocean swath bounded by Fiji's two largest islands, Viti Levu and Vanua Levu. Strong oceanic currents funnel through the narrow Vatu-i-Ra channel and are forced up over submerged seamounts, delivering a constant nutrient stream that nourishes some of the most colourful and dense soft-coral reefs on Earth. The signature dives are deepwater pinnacles: E6 rises sheer-sided from roughly 900 m (about 3,000 ft) to within a metre of the surface in the centre of the channel, with its famous 'Cathedral' swim-through; Mount Mutiny, a few miles away, drapes a wall of multicoloured Dendronephthya, Chironephthya and Siphonogorgia soft corals divers call 'Rainbow Reef.' Pelagic-flushed flanks draw schooling barracuda, trevally, dogtooth tuna, grey reef and whitetip sharks, occasional scalloped hammerheads and eagle rays, while the lee sides shelter delicate fans and clouds of anthias. The 110.5 km² Vatu-i-Ra Conservation Park (established 2017) protects the heart of the area. Most premier sites are remote, exposed pinnacles best reached by liveaboard or from Rakiraki resorts, and several carry stronger, less predictable currents better suited to experienced divers.

Highlights

What makes this dive worth the trip.

  • E6 is a seamount that rises sheer-sided from roughly 900 m (about 3,000 ft) to within a metre of the surface in the centre of the narrowest part of the Vatu-i-Ra channel, intercepting nutrient-rich currents funnelled between Viti Levu and Vanua Levu—its 'Cathedral' swim-through, where light beams pierce the chimney, is a signature feature.
  • Bligh Water is world-renowned as the 'soft coral capital of the world': the area's nutrient-laden currents nourish Fiji's reefs and make its Dendronephthya soft corals among the most colourful and abundant anywhere, with Mount Mutiny's multicoloured soft-coral wall nicknamed 'Rainbow Reef.'
  • The 110.5 km² Vatu-i-Ra Conservation Park was established in 2017 through a partnership of local tourism and liveaboard operators, the Nakorotubu District communities, the Ra Provincial Office, the Wildlife Conservation Society, the Fiji Environmental Law Association and BirdLife International; nearly 80% is a 'no-take' zone.

E6

The most celebrated seamount in Bligh Water, rising sheer-sided from roughly 900 m to within about a metre of the surface in the centre of the Vatu-i-Ra channel. The two current-flushed sides draw pelagics—schooling barracuda, trevally and surgeonfish, with occasional scalloped hammerheads and eagle rays—while the protected lee side is carpeted in delicate soft corals and sea fans. Its signature feature is the 'Cathedral,' a swim-through chimney where light beams pierce the ceiling around 20–30 m. There is enough to see across overhangs and canyons to fill several dives.

Mount Mutiny

A deepwater pinnacle a few miles from E6 in the Vatu-i-Ra channel, named—like the passage itself—for the Bounty mutiny. Its claim to fame is a wall of multicoloured soft corals nicknamed 'Rainbow Reef,' built from unusual thin-stalked Chironephthya and Siphonogorgia that begin around 15 m and descend well below recreational limits, blanketing the south flank in reds, oranges, pinks and purples. Pelagics similar to E6 patrol the current side, with schools of jackfish and barracuda, while golden damselfish hover among dark green black-sun-coral colonies. It is regularly cited as one of the best soft-coral dives in the world.

Cat's Meow

A deepwater site sheltered from swell by the Vuya barrier reef, famous for its extensive, photogenic soft-coral formations and featured in the IMAX film 'Coral Reef Adventure.' Despite sitting in deep water it stays relatively protected, making it one of the more accessible of Bligh Water's signature soft-coral dives. The reef structure carries dense Dendronephthya cover that inflates vividly when the current runs.

UndeNAI'Able

On the northern side of Bligh Water, this site comprises one large and two smaller sloping pinnacles that top out near the surface, draped in healthy hard corals and swept by schools of trevally and barracuda. It is a reliable spot for the regionally distinctive Fiji anemonefish, plus flasher wrasse and the tiny Terry's dwarfgoby. A varied profile of pinnacle slopes and reef makes it a well-rounded current dive.

Mellow Yellow

A pinnacle dive named for the large population of golden-yellow soft coral trees blanketing the current-facing side of its two submerged pinnacles, contrasted by red and purple sea fans and green sun-coral formations that shelter aggregations of vibrant reef fish. Grey reef sharks, barracuda schools and turtles patrol the reef, and scorpionfish and nudibranchs reward macro hunters. The site also makes an excellent night dive, when lionfish and flatworms come out.

Black Magic Mountain

A classic Bligh Water pinnacle showcasing exceptionally healthy hard and soft corals and huge schools of pelagic fish—bigeye jacks, fusiliers and clouds of anthias. Different shark species and eagle rays are commonly seen cruising the current-swept flanks. The colourful soft-coral cover and reliable fish action make it one of the standout reef dives in the channel.
